Site layout

Generally, the site is organized as a pyramid of increasing depth of detail, starting with the home page as an overview, then to the "Properties" and "Thetis" pages which serve as key pages, leading in turn to further detail pages and their subpages on aspects of our project and the island.

From each key page links take you to related pages. The navigation text will always be found at the top or bottom of the page.

Navigation

The key pages of our website can be found via the navigation text ("Navigate:......")bar at the top and bottom of this page and every page on the site. Use your mouse to click on a link, or select with scroll keys and activate (eg. with "enter"). We have kept the links in the body of the text to a minimum to reduce confusion. The bottom nav bar has more detail than the top one.

The top navigation text bar also has a note of which page you are on.

Depending on your browser, links will be displayed in blue text and underlined. If you have visited the link it may be in another color. Some links are intended to take you to bookmarks, defined places in the text of a page. Some older browsers will only take you to the top of that page.

In general, links in the body of the text that are "emphasized" are to other pages on our site, other links are to bookmarks on the same (or, occasionally, another ) page. If your browser will not follow the bookmark links successfully, just navigate to the cited page via the standard navigation links, or, for links on the same page, scroll.

Longer pages have a navigation index list (such as the one above) near the top of the page, the links take you to bookmarked headings of the same name in the text. Below each bookmarked section will be a link to return you to the index, "To Top" or "Index".

On each navigation text bar is a link to a pop up navigation help window. This will only work if your browser can use javascript. If not, there is also a link to this page "Site guide and help", if you want that in a separate window, you may (browser dependant) be able to right click and choose"open in new window".

Some of the links in the body of text open new windows for the new page. This is noted in the text. This is so that you can view the new page (eg. a detail plan or external link) and still have the original page for continued reference. Some browsers may not support this feature, and you will then have to go back to the parent page using the back button or equivalent.

To contact us, please use the e mail address at the bottom of each page, or see our "Contact Us" page. The e mail mail to link will normally open your e mail client, if not just copy the address into the "To" field of your e mail.

Page and image loading, connection speed

The text of all our pages will be readable while any images download, so the time need not be wasted. If you are looking at the page and see large blank spaces or blurred images just scroll down and keep reading, the images will load. You have not reached the bottom of the page until you see the navigation text, which looks similar on all pages. We suggest using the Tabsurf multi pane browser (see our links page for free download location) to improve browsing the web on a slow connection.

All main page's text will load within a few seconds and they should be fully open (including all images) in under one minute on a 28.8 modem; the detail plan, detail map and photograph page images may be slower. This consideration of download time means some of the images have rather poorer quality than we might have wished. We have tried to separate any sections that would not be fully accessible onto their own pages in order to reduce frustration; there are three key pages of larger/higher quality images - the "photographs" page, the "Detail Plans" page and the "Detail Maps" page, so use these pages if you want better images.

Browser type, accessibility

Almost all of the site is completely accessible, even if you are using a text browser. Javascript is used in the pop up help window and in a vector format drawing viewer.

Some older browsers and the Opera browser have trouble with javascript, if you are using these you will not be able to use those two facilities, but the rest of the site will be fine.

Some of the links in the body of text open new windows for the new page. This is noted in the text. This is so that you can view the new page (eg. a detail plan or external link) and still have the original page for continued reference. Some browsers may not support this feature, and you will then have to go back to the parent page using the back button or equivalent.

This web site was developed to be as accessible as possible. This was a philosophical as well as a practical choice. That is why you will not find large graphic interface navigation bars, unnecessary images, frames, whole pages that are tables, background colors or patterns/images, and the text probably looks rather dull since we avoided the use of most font, alignment, cascading style sheets, and other formatting systems.

Other site information

You may notice some duplication, this is because we cannot assume that people will read every page! If you are reading a paragraph that seems familiar, please scan on to what you are looking for - we have not duplicated any large sections.
